From Haiti, I: Songs in the Night
Port-au-Prince, Haiti -- Landing in Haiti this morning felt like I had arrived home. The airport was quite busy and many other individuals crowded the area outside the terminal. The arrival terminal is actually a building on the side of the airport, opened after the main terminal was heavily damaged by the catastrophic earthquake four months ago.
As we went out during rush hour, people on both sides of the street seemed to be going about their endeavors as drivers creatively maneuvered through traffic. Street vendors line the sidewalks and street corners. People appear to be doing whatever they can to support themselves. There seems to be a strong entrepreneural spirit. Some are even using laptops in the tent camps to provide resume writing services for a small fee, according to one source. Resilient? Yes!

It is about 9 pm local time. As I write this entry, an all-women, all-night prayer service has just started outside. They are singing jubilantly, reciting psalms, and expressing gratitude to the Lord. Tomorrow I will be visiting one of the tent cities and possibly a camp set up for orphans. Tomorrow night I will be sharing the Word at an outdoor crusade. The itenuary in the days to come also includes leading a training with university medical students on helping individuals cope in the aftermath of the disaster.
You should hear the ladies sing as I write. It's beautiful, uplifting and a reminder that through it all, God still reigns!Written: April 23, 2010 from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, during Dr. Felix's seven-day visit to work with children and adults impacted by January 12th's catastrophic earthquake.
